What Parents Say
The Jewish Community Center of Staten Island receives mixed reviews. While many praise its facilities, cleanliness, and friendly staff, several customers report inconsistent customer service at the front desk and concerns about pricing relative to offerings.
Most of the time the staff are looking down at their phones. I am never greeted at the front desk or when I walk into the gym. Does the staff realize where their paychecks come from? As a paying customer, I expect to be greeted when walking in or even a nod would be ok. They seem miserable.
Terrible experience. A few days ago I went inside and an old lady at the desk started by roughly asking “what do you want?” I told her I was interested in a membership. She said membership was not available at the moment because of a tour. But the way she said it she sounded angry AT ME. I said I didn’t have much time then she proceeded to tell me “then this place isn’t for you. You can get out”. First of all who is this lady?! She’s very old and should not be the face of the front desk. I don’t know how many old people work at the front but this lady is the one who was balding. Not to mention she was on her phone the entire time ignoring me. I will not be coming back and will be looking elsewhere. I have many friends on the island and will be referring them AWAY from the JCC. If I could put 0 stars I would and I highly recommend the JCC RETIRE this old woman. It is laughable.
I am writing this review because of a deeply upsetting and unacceptable experience I had at the JCC when I went in to ask about enrolling my child in sports activities. I approached the front desk expecting basic information about programs, passes, or memberships. The receptionist I spoke with was an elderly woman, likely in her late 70s, with a very distinctive facial injury that made her easy to identify. Too old to be a receptionist. Instead of being greeted with professionalism or even basic courtesy, I was immediately met with hostility. Without asking me a single question about who I was, what I needed, or what program I was interested in, she looked at me and said that they “don’t give passes or memberships to illegals.” I was stunned. That statement was not only inappropriate, it was openly discriminatory. I am Native American. The only thing this woman could have been basing her comment on was the color of my skin. To be spoken to that way, in a public place and in front of others, was humiliating and infuriating. I walked in simply trying to sign my child up for activities and was instead made to feel judged, unwelcome, and stereotyped. I drove out of my way, with my child, expecting a community-focused, inclusive environment. Instead, I was treated with disrespect before I could even finish asking a simple question. There was no professionalism, no attempt to clarify anything, and no effort to correct the offensive assumption she made. This experience raises serious concerns about how families are treated and who is being placed at the front desk as the face of this organization. Someone representing a community center should not be making racist assumptions or speaking to people this way. Because of this incident, the JCC has lost my business. No family should ever be made to feel unwelcome or judged the moment they walk through the door, and I will be warning others to think twice before coming here.
The elevator been broke for 6 days now ! This is horrible there is a lot of elderly people that can’t go there because the elevator does not work this needs to be fixed asap. Maintenance never does there job !
I was told swimming class for my girls the class starts at 9:00 AM but I had to come in person since I was on the waitlist for registration . We showed up on time, only to be told the person handling it wouldn’t be there until 10:00AM.On top of that, the staff here are not willing to help at all also they had terrible attitudes — completely unhelpful, dismissive, and unwilling to assist in any way. It felt like no one cared or wanted to take responsibility. The whole experience was frustrating and unprofessional. I expected better from the JCC.
