What Parents Say
This facility is a YMCA community center, not a dedicated daycare. Reviews are mixed (3.6/5 rating). Parents praise the friendly staff, cleanliness, and diverse fitness classes, but criticize inconsistent pool lifeguard staffing, limited weightlifting equipment, and aging facilities.
The lady at the front desk was very nice. I went for the open pickle ball. I was told by the Instructor there that basically everybody here knows what they’re doing and nobody wants to play with the beginner. I have a black belt in Jiu Jitsu. I have played tennis and other sports. He was inferring. I couldn’t keep up and I feel judged me incorrectly. But most important, it’s just the Y. It’s not an elite club that you don’t welcome newbies to. I’m trying to find a new sport and felt very discouraged when I left. I feel that was really rude. If they’re going to be so cliquish, then they should post it on the website as a league not an open court. He’s an instructor. He said playing the game was not a problem. It’s knowing how to keep score and rotate. So the people at this Y are so rude that they can’t help someone with that. Say OK rotate or help keep the score. Horrible
The location of this Y is perfect since it’s just a mile from our home. The gym is tiny in comparison to the newer, much larger and updated Y’s, but it does provide you with everything you need for a good workout. My biggest complaint is with the pool. They seem to routinely be understaffed with lifeguards. I’ve been in the pool for less than 10 minutes on multiple occasions when I was informed they would be closing the pool and reopening in 15 minutes because there was only 1 guard on duty. More than once I arrived at 5am to swim, only to be told the lifeguard didn’t show up (this morning was the 3rd time it’s happened). The staff has always been friendly, so I really want to rate it higher. But the inconsistency with the pool and the underwhelming gym makes it hard to give it anything higher than a 2 star, especially when you see what other Y’s offer at the same price.
I called the help desk to inquire about the swim lessons. After talking for 15 mins I was not able to get any good information. She kept on giggling to other people that she does not understand my questions. I felt she was very unprofessional. When I said to give the line to someone else to whom I can talk properly she put me on a long hold. I felt her behavior extremely disrespectful and unapologetic. I hope they train their staff well to deal with customers.
We've gone here for our sons' swimming lessons for over a year. The experience has been hit-or-miss as there seems to be a real staffing shortage for instructors and several of them aren't very good. The lesson times are also very limited and mostly available on Saturdays. Today I was told of a new policy that will ensure we don't return. The YMCA has decided that we can no longer sign up our children for classes at the same time as full-membership families. My youngest son has special needs and his membership is paid for through insurance. Apparently this also means he is treated like a second-class member and we will be edged out of the already limited lesson times that he can attend. My other son has a lessons-only membership so he is also not able to sign up until a week after registration opens. I'm sure this is just their most recent play to get more people to sign up for family memberships but instead it means we'll be dropping our memberships altogether and no longer attending any lessons. This is the last straw among many other issues including: - rude staff - outdated facility - limited parking - lack of communication
Our family has been going to the YMCA for about 12 years now. The facilities are kept very clean. Most of the staff are very friendly and helpful. The youth aquatics program is really good - our kids started with the baby classes and worked their way to the top skill level. I feel they now have excellent swimming skills because of these classes. Some of the other youth classes are hit or miss. My son experienced some bullying in one of the sport classes and the instructors really did nothing. In the dodgeball class the other kids were so rough that my kids were getting hurt every classes and decided they didn’t want to go back any more. The gymnastics classes, on the other hand, were a favorite among my two girls. Each of my kids also seemed to enjoy the taekwando classes offered there. The only other downside at this Y is that some of the youth programs that used to be free as a member are now charged a fee. I guess some people might having been signing up and then not showing up when it was free. But I wish they hadn’t made the fees so expensive. When you factor in the annual cost of membership plus class frees for three kids it really adds up fast.
