My two children were lucky enough to have gone to Haight Ashbury Cooperative Nursery School and it was some of the best times in our family. The community with the other parents, loving and helping each other’s children at such an important time in their development was so wonderful. Snack time, story time with Cocoa (who gives nothing but kindness and live to each and every child (and parent) are things that are unlike any other school. The freedom for our young kids to dress up, play, ready, play in the sand, ride bikes, do crafts and to choose what works for them is such a gift to our kids! If you are considering HACNS, you and your family will be so happy to share that precious time in your child’s life at HACNS!!
We had two boys attend HACNS over 5 years and the art, stories, building, imagination, drama, digging, snacking, creation, reading, moving, making friends and growing was such a fantastic experience for them! The community of parent volunteers and a play-based approach is a great way to be involved with your child's development, and we've made amazing friends to boot. Haight Ashbury Cooperative Nursery is a Cole Valley neighborhood treasure. This play-based school has been amazing for our daughter. It's situated at the Grattan Playground which allows for a lot of outdoor play, which is so important at preschool ages. Teacher Cocoa is so very dedicated to the kids, their development, and ensuring an inclusive, collaborative environment. The kids are exposed to lots of age-appropriate activities that develop different skills sets in the most natural way, as well as lots of outdoor time. As a co-op, parents are expected to be active participants in the building of this amazing community. On that front, the communication channels are open and parents are very friendly and collaborative as well. My daughter has thrived at this school, hasn't yet had a day when she doesn't want to attend, and is always asking for more time at the school. Kid-approved as well!
What a wonderful place and nurturing community to be a part of! HACNS helped our three boys get the right start in life and brought us together as a family. Most of our best friends are coop families that we met along the way. If you can do it, and be a part of this wonderful coop preschool, it can be the best experience of your child’s life! Our son is in 3rd grade and still talks about how much he loved his preschool days! He remembers the magic of it all, and so do we. We had an immediate community that felt like family, and being in a major city without family, the support and friendship from the community made San Francisco home. Cocoa writes a poem for every student when they graduate, and we still chuckle at how well she saw and loved our child for exactly who he is and how much of her poem about him is still true. I feel blessed that we landed at HACNS when we did and would recommend this magical place to anyone looking for a cooperative preschool.
