First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg is praised as a welcoming, mission-minded faith community with engaging services and a strong sense of belonging. However, recent reviews raise serious concerns about inappropriate communications between staff and minor children, inadequate reporting protocols, and insufficient safeguarding measures.
After Hearing allegations about inappropriate contact between staff and children last year I was cautious not to comment. But when i found out that in December 2025 Pastor Dr. Peter Thompson was disciplined for allowing "unsafe spaces" and not reporting this communication when he knew about it, but the Session still kept this quiet and kept him in place. I am worried that they are not using proper boundaries between people in authority and children. Still many great people here, but we should have learned rom the catholic mess that church leaders do not need to be alone with children withut their parents.
I have gone to services there and many of my friends are members there for decades and it's been a wonderful influence on Lynchburg. Lately, however, I've heard of snapchat communications between the minister and minor children that the presbytery has been looking into but has not released their findings and it is concerning that they "neither confirm or deny." Update: the church has suspended the pastor "temporarily". Let us pray they do the right thing.
Frist Presbyterian is a loving and welcoming community - from the moment you walk in you are treated like a valued member of the church community. I didn't know anyone when I moved to Lynchburg and within a few hours of my first interaction with the members of FPCLY I felt like I had friends and a community. Sunday morning services with Peter are always engaging - and there are opportunities for everyone to get involved! The College Cares program introduced me to friends that I will have for a lifetime, and a wonderful support system! I highly recommend First Presbyterian and I am so lucky to have found this awesome community!
As an LU student, I felt like the sermons were absolutely great & scripture focused. They have a strong focus on having a very welcoming community, and play beautiful hymns. Beautiful building as well.
