I moved here from Portland and was told this YMCA is one of the best gyms in Eugene. In Portland, I paid around $25 per month for a gym that had a large weight room, a good-sized pool, and a sauna. Everything worked consistently whenever the gym was open. No constant closures, no surprises. Here, I’m paying almost twice as much plus a significant membership fee. I expected better quality — but the reality has been the opposite. I mainly joined for the pool and sauna. For several days in a row, I’ve come in and found pool closed for regular members. There are constant classes and activities, and regular members simply can’t use the facilities. That feels very unprofessional. People pay for access, but it seems like priority is given to other programs instead of paying members. It gets worse. One of the pool staff members spoke to me in a very aggressive and threatening tone. I didn’t see the closure sign and stepped into the pool . Instead of calmly explaining the situation, he immediately told me that if I didn’t leave right away, he will kick me out.. I can recommend the weight room — it’s decent, though often crowded. But if you’re planning to join mainly for the pool or sauna, I strongly do not recommend spending your money here.
After reading a negative review of the Y, I’m compelled to share my own experience. Yes, this Y can be crowded at times but I attend on average 5-6 days a week and have ALWAYS found the facility to be clean and well maintained and I’ve NEVER felt it was in any way playing loose and fast w/ safety. I’ve also had 100% positive interactions w/ professional and caring staff for 5 solid years. Whether it is the cleaning crew, front desk, instructors, volunteers, management - every single employee has been courteous and gone above and beyond to be helpful consistently. My husband and I have been members since 2020 and we fully understand why so many Eugene citizens have enthusiastically joined the Y, it is because this place is not simply a formulaic gym, it is a community. We also accept and appreciate that we alone do not have a claim on the Y, EVERYONE is welcomed at this community spot and all are encouraged to make health/fitness a part of their lives. Thank you to Curt and the entire front desk, the cleaners, the instructors and every other employee for meeting the challenges in accommodating a large and diverse population and still striving to do your personal best - so many of us see you and appreciate you.
The new Eugene Family YMCA facility is outstanding. My mom, my daughter, and I all go there, and it’s easily the nicest gym in town. The building is well designed, the equipment is great, and the overall culture there is really positive. One thing I really appreciate is how clean everything is. At other gyms I’ve been to in the past, cleanliness has been an issue, but that’s never the case here. The staff clearly takes pride in maintaining the facility. The fitness classes are excellent. Yoga, spin, Pilates, and strength classes are all top notch, and the instructors do a great job. The pool area, sauna, and hot tub are also really nice and well maintained. The location is another big plus since it connects easily to the Rexius Trail, which makes it easy to combine a workout with time outside. There are a few minor downsides. Because the facility is so good, it can get pretty busy. The men’s locker room feels a little small, and I’d love to see clearer signage around the pool and sauna area reminding people to shower before entering the pool. That’s a small thing, but it would help. Overall, though, the YMCA is doing just about everything right. The pricing feels fair for what you get, and the facility is extremely well run. I just wish there were more YMCAs like this in the surrounding communities. Highly recommended.
I love the Eugene YMCA down to my toes. My two and a half year old requests that we see "Miss Lissa" every day, and my 8 month old beams every time she sees Michelle. Everyone who watches kids - Iris, Ruby, Anya, Yogi, Zoe - has been amazing. At the upstairs desk, Christi helped me to search every.single.last.locker. when I lost my gym bag, staying until we finally found it in the recesses of the big lost and found. Plus the whole building is super modern, easy to navigate, just generally nice. If I could, I'd move in. Thanks, YMCA folks!
Updated 11/12. This location is currently at an occupancy stage to be a major fire Hazard. The YMCA facility at South Eugene was incredible when it opened but has since been over run with horrific crowding. The membership as of November 1 2025 was approaching 19 thousand. This number is larger than many of the towns that most of us grew up in. Yesterday between opening and 4pm Pacific Daylight Time over 2576 members had checked in not including all the staff maintenance and management present in the building and all the children in the various programs. This number likely doubled after the 6pm rush hour surge where eyewitnesses reported every single piece of equipment was in use while people were ....WAITING IN LINE to get on machines. At the end of the day the views are amazing the variety of machines is great and the pool is an added bonus with a hot tub The lack of management oand regulation regarding membership numbers has ruined the experience for the vast majority of people spending any more than ONE hour at this location. Parking is a disaster and the deep cleaning is missed upstairs in the workout areas under the machines. The communal bathrooms on the first floor are deplorably dirty. If you are considering becoming a new member, DONT. This location is full and if a fire happens or earthquake during peak hours serious injuries are HIGHLY likely. Look elsewhere until the membership numbers correct themselves. What a shame regarding such a beautiful Facility.
