Update. After getting a second appointment I really liked the staff and Dr. And we finally have answers about my son. My son gets car sick and after an hour drive they refused to see him because they can’t tell if he is actually sick. We waited 6 months for this autism evaluation appointment. They refused to take his temperature, because they don’t do that. But they said we could come in and use a room to change his clothes. Worst place I’ve been too. He has never been turned away for getting car sick. They also called me 3 times the previous Friday with 3 different appointment times, that were left on my voicemail.
Sadly disappointed in some of the staff here. The occupational therapist was very friendly and professional. However, once it was time to go to the medical side of the clinic I became disappointed quickly. The 1st person who took vitals got agitated that my son was playing with an empty gatorade bottle. When wr met with the NP things got worse as she asked my son (after he was obviously overstimulated from the noises of other people) that and I QUOTE "if there was a kid in your class that had down syndrome or was mentally retarded would you tell them to shut up?". I was astounded that in an establishment who prides themselves on diagnosing and treating people with intellectual disabilities that she would openly, and without pause use the R word. While she did a good job explaining the differences between different disorders, I couldn't get past the fact that she thought this verbiage was okay to use. I wish we would've been able to see Dr Kitts, as I have heard she is an incredible doctor in her field of work. The NP stated because he is communicating fine and that he understood he was doing something wrong, that it automatically pulled away an autism diagnosis. During a follow up with the doctor who referred us here- it was stated that basically because the evaluation wasn't thorough (due to behavior difficulty) they can't diagnose him. However, it wasn't off the table. So I'm getting 2 very different reports. Also the NP stated my child has OCD but it was not listed in the paper work sent to me or the referring doctor. Miscommunication or just a personal opinion of what she thought- I'm not sure. But I'm leaning toward the latter, seeing as how she acted and spoke about his behaviors. I wrote an email to easter seals Inc. As I dont really want to deal with this specific location to voice this. However, I have not received any communication back. I believe some company wide training on communication and verbiage would be beneficial.
My 32 year old disabled son has been treated by Dr. Ellen Kitts for over 20 years. Dr. Kitts and the staff at the Wheeling and St. Clairsville locations have always been relentless in providing outstanding care and services for my son. Dr. Kitts is amazing and is always responsive and considerate in any and all of our needs and requests. I would highly recommend Easterseals Rehabilitation Center to anyone who needs the specialized services they offer.
