This is geared more towards the Early Learning Center (ELC) than it is the church, but one of their pastors did over see the daycare, so it affects the church. My oldest daughter started daycare at the ELC in June of 2023. We were so happy with our teachers, the way they treated my daughter, and how they communicated with us as parents. We felt like we had an extended village at our daycare. We welcomed our second daughter who started ELC in February of 2025. We were so excited for both of our girls to receive the best care Columbia City had to offer. This all changed when leadership changed at the beginning of this year. There was a new pastor who took over ELC and a new director. Staff turnover went up exponentially, rooms were being closed due to short staffing leaving working parents unable to work because they had to keep their kids home. The staff that stuck it out was over worked and weren’t given breaks, including bathroom breaks. Neither the director or the pastor stepped in to help. As a matter of fact, the pastor went on vacation as they were in the midst of their “crisis.” We sat down with both the pastor and the director, this conversation went absolutely no where. And the reason may be the alternative motive for closing the daycare as a whole and opening a preschool instead. That’s exactly what happened. They told staff on a Monday evening that they were closing the ELC in two weeks and parents were notified right after. This affected so many people in many different ways. We were losing our village, our amazing care takers for our girls. They were more than teachers, they were family. The staff lost their job AND lost means of daycare for their own children. My now 2.5 year old and 8 month old had to be uprooted from the only place they knew and had to start all over again. I DO NOT recommend this church for this reason. And I also DO NOT recommend their preschool (City Kids Preschool) as the management is the same as it was for the ELC. This dynamic will most likely continue into the preschool and I have major concerns for the families and the children who are in their care.
CCUMC has been my church home my entire life. As with any church we have our ups and down but the people here are family. They are warm and inviting, they are caring and they love Jesus. So why the 3 stars? There is always room for improvement and the Methodist church in general is a large reason for the need for improvement. I love the congregation and look forward to our growth. I love our missions and our Be One, Make One focus. I do NOT love having our pastors moved every few years or the decision made by the bishops and council that excluded a portion of God’s children. I am happy to say that in the short time that Pastor Rob has been with us, I find him to be energetic, funny, caring, and full of grace and spirit as are our youth Pastors and Ministries. We are moving up. Come see us.
I am unable to get to church due to a fall. A member sent me a text during the service hoping I'm doing better and to say she was thinking of me. That's CCUMC! Caring Pastor and members!
