They are not equipped to teach Pre-K. There aren't any workbooks, or structured learning, they just expect kids to follow suit through peer pressure. I was asked to have my son tested because he takes too long to sign his name when my August born, 4-year-old didn't know how to write. They also don't teach them (my first pencil, worksheets, nothing). Several PROFESSIONALS said he needs to work on his confidence but there is nothing developmentally concerning. I decided to start watching the classroom when I realized why my son didn't speak or want to be there. The kids are awful. They are mean, horribly behaved, and have mentioned his "skin" (we are Black and I don't blame the teachers for that). Over a few days I watch the kids snatch the pencil from him during sign in or take his toy (they're allowed to bring in a toy for the day) and the teachers were too busy chitchatting to notice. I've watched a little boy lose his temper and start throwing chairs while only one TA was in the room. My son came home with scratches and said a kid grabbed him (I also got an incident report), but that wouldn't be the last time a kid would put their hands on my son. When I brought my concern to the lead teacher, she blamed my son's shyness on why he was scared and didn't think discipline or removing the dangerous child from the classroom was appropriate. Ma'am I was there, I was scared for him and the TA. If it were my son doing it, he probably would've been expelled from the school. After the teacher's response I pulled my son from the school and sent a letter that I also cc'd to the schoolboard. My son is now in a charter school in a different district where they are qualified and can recognize shyness versus disability, because they're not chasing extra funding. They also taught him how to read and write instead of expecting him to magically acquire the skill.
