What Parents Say
Bethlehem Learning Center receives highly polarized reviews. Positive reviews consistently praise Ms. Laurie, the VPK teacher, for her dedication, warmth, and effective preparation of children for elementary school. However, negative reviews raise serious concerns about safety supervision, health/hygiene standards, administrative responsiveness, and inconsistent discipline practices.
I want to share our recent experience with Bethlehem Lutheran’s preschool and VPK program to help other parents make informed decisions. Our daughter had a great experience in the 3-year-old room — she was happy, eager to go each day, and we felt confident in the care provided. Unfortunately, that changed when she transitioned into the VPK program. She quickly became anxious about attending, often crying in the mornings and expressing discomfort with the classroom environment. She described situations where children were disciplined for minor things, such as not folding up their bedding properly or playing with another student. While I understand that children sometimes exaggerate, the consistency of her concerns — paired with changes in her mood and behavior — was concerning. We also experienced a lapse in communication when she became ill one day. She had a high fever and appeared visibly unwell for an extended period before we were contacted. What was most upsetting, however, was the response we received after submitting our two-week withdrawal notice. That same evening, we were informed via text and email that she could no longer return — with no clear explanation. This was unexpected, unprofessional, and lacked the transparency we would hope for from a program that promotes Christian values. While every experience is different, ours ended with a deep sense of disappointment. We did not feel the environment was supportive or compassionate, and we would not recommend this VPK program to other families. Our children deserve nurturing, respectful spaces where they are heard, cared for, and feel safe. I had several concerns during my child’s time in the VPK program that I feel are important for other parents to know. At one point, my daughter wasn't going outside for playtime because the teacher shared she had a health condition and couldn't be out in 90°+ heat. While I understand health limitations, outdoor time is essential for young children and should be consistently provided. I also found it troubling that my child was eating lunch and snacks on the floor, which I feel is not sanitary or appropriate. Even more concerning, my daughter told me she would go to the bathroom alone in the hallway, sometimes with other kids, including boys — raising serious safety and supervision concerns. I did bring these issues to the director's attention. Some were eventually resolved, but they were not taken seriously at first, which was disappointing. I’m sharing this so other parents can make an informed decision.
I do not recommend Bethlehem Preschool based on my family’s experience. My daughter has attended since she was one year old, and over time, I’ve observed several troubling issues. She was often sick, as were many of the other children, and I would frequently find her with a runny nose and visibly upset—sometimes left crying alone in a corner when I arrived. The facility does not appear to prioritize cleanliness or proper hygiene, which raises serious concerns about the health and safety of the children. Additionally, the staff seems to be underpaid and possibly underqualified, which can impact the quality of care and attention the children receive. We also faced significant issues with potty training support. The director refused to allow our daughter to wear pull-ups during this phase, resulting in her soiling multiple outfits a day. She was sometimes sent home in other children’s clothes, without underwear, which is unacceptable. Overall, I found the environment to be disorganized, unsupportive, and not conducive to a child’s emotional or physical well-being. While I did not have the final say in removing her from the school, I would strongly urge other parents to consider alternative options for childcare
My daughter absolutely loved her time at this preschool, attending from age 2 until she graduated at 5 years old. I truly couldn't imagine a better start for her education. The staff created such a nurturing, fun, and safe environment that she was excited to go to school every day. They not only focused on academics but also on social-emotional growth, helping her become a confident and well-adjusted child. A special shout-out to Ms. Laurie! She is an amazing VPK teacher who is passionate about teaching and truly loves her students. Her dedication made a massive difference in preparing my daughter for elementary school. I would highly recommend this preschool to any parent looking for a quality, caring, and comprehensive early childhood program.
We've had 2 grandchildren in Ms Laurie's VPK. She has many many years of experience at this church teaching her VPK class. She is very professional and caring. She loves her students and her students LOVE her. As for the other reviews, all being added at the same time? I doubt that all of them had students in her class in the same session. She starts her lesson plans months before a new year starts. Ms Laurie is compassionate and attentive to all of her students. I understand a parent being particular about their child, but I've never heard or seen a complaint about her until one month ago. Our grandchildren learned all they needed to go into kindergarten, and for that we are very grateful.
Ms. Laurie has been an incredible teacher to both of our children. She is caring, adaptable, and treats every child like her own. Her classroom is full of warmth, patience, and joy. She creates a safe and nurturing space where kids thrive. Thanks to her, both of our children were well-prepared for elementary school—not just academically, but socially and emotionally, too. She’s not only a great teacher, but a truly positive influence in their lives. We’re so grateful for her!
