What Parents Say
This is a well-maintained YMCA facility in a historic downtown Pittsfield building featuring an excellent indoor pool, fitness classes, and wellness center. Staff are generally described as friendly and helpful. Members appreciate the renovated facility as a community asset, though some note concerns about membership costs and facility maintenance issues.
The staff at Pittsfield YMCA were quite rude and extremely unpleasant to me. I was briefly a member of Pittsfield YMCA, the first time going there I arrived a bit late. Guy at the front desk, "Jacob" told me no worries if I was late leaving, he said that staff are always there at least an hour after closing. Next time I went, different person at the front desk and she had a nasty attitude. Got there at 9:45, the front-desk lady said that she doesn't let anyone in starting 15 minutes before they close. I thought that the idea of a set closing time is no one's allowed in past the actual time of close, but whatever, I guess in her mind closing time starts fifteen minutes before closing time? A few days later, got there at 9:40, same woman at the front desk started yelling at me and tried to say that I was getting there too late again. I told her I just wanted to go clear out my locker, and she didn't even want to let me get my things. I said I was going to be fast, and she threatened me that if I was there past 10:00 my membership would be revoked. I told her I wouldn't be there late and I left several minutes before the closing time. On the way out, I said something along the lines of "I apologize for any inconvience" and the front-desk woman, "Carolyn" said "you tell me sorry every day and nothing changes" - really was very bizarre, I had never dealt with her outside of 2 interactions at YMCA, and regardless I certainly don't make a habit of apology. The following day, I get a call from some incredibly rude staff member, "Kayla," saying my membership at YMCA was revoked. When I tried to get any sort of coherent explanation, "Kayla" started yelling at me and hung up abruptly. I went to the location in person to attempt and understand why they cancelled my YMCA membership. The same staff member who had been rude to me over the phone, "Kayla" was in their lobby and started giving me the same crappy attitude with no explanation. Kayla said "we can't have you wandering the halls at 1:30 AM" and that is insane, I was only ever there till 10:30 PM at the latest, the first time I was there. I was trying to understand what the heck the problem was. Kayla started yelling at me to leave, I asked for a refund of my membership fee and she refused to refund my $40. I was being incredibly polite, and she actually called the police on me instead of explaining what her issue was. Kayla also claimed I violated their "code of conduct" except I wasn't ever provided with any type of guidelines or code of conduct. I was offended and still am, I can't emphasize enough how ugly and horrid dealing with her was. I was told that management would call me and set a time to discuss what had happened. That was two weeks ago and I haven't heard from them. Overall I really enjoyed the YMCA facility in the brief time I was there, however dealing with YMCA staff and trying to understand policy was surreal, disturbing and definitely isn't worth the headache in my opinion. I recommend anyone who might consider a membership at Pittsfield YMCA, just don't. Look elsewhere. The staff seem like a gross mess, and that's my being polite.
This YMCA is located in a beautiful, historical building in downtown Pittsfield, Ma. There is a ramp or about 4 stairs to enter this Y. For access to each floor there are stairs or an elevator. Out of multiple indoor pools I have been to, in 8 different states, this location has the best maintained and largest indoor pool . When all are open, there are 7 laps lanes, otherwise, there are specific times where there is an open swim area open, which occupies 2-3 lanes & is used for water aerobics or open swim. There are 3 parking spots located directly in front of this YMCA & there is a free parking lot located around the corner.
Updste: we all have bad days and i think understanding works both ways, I can have understanding for the people that work here in the same way they have understanding for me. I still have these suggestions but overall i like it here. Two suggestions one there is no reason the music in the wellness center should be blasting so loud it triggers an anxiety attack, that defeats the purpose of the "wellness center". Two when a customer walks out and says have a good day, customarily a reciprocal response is appropriate.
Spotless and spacious room for weightlifting and cardio.
Pool is pretty good. But the reasons for complaint continue. September 2025. The pool had just opened after 2 weeks shut down. So naturally I expected the pay date to be shifted by 2 weeks, to compensate for 2 weeks loss of use. However the girl at the front desk, named Melissa, insisted that I had to pay. Because: 1. "They don't do refunds". I wasn't asking for a refund. 2. "There was an ample warning of the shutdow". So, does this allow someone to take my money for not providing service? 3. "The was an alternative at BCC pool". No one told me that. The bottom line, this was a deceitful answer. YMCA must be better. The simple and fair answer was to extend the pay date by 2 weeks, instead of making customers feel duped. 4. The amount of preferential treatment in the pool is staggering. Really pisses me off.
